Giveaway, the FINISHED (for now)!

Hello again, world!

image found through Google search

I'm a little late with this post, today was somewhat busy.  I'll dive right in with the giveaway winner: Tiki at Tiki Stitches was the only one who entered and wins by default haha. She just expressed interest in the Monticello piece though the giveaway was for both. Tiki, iffins you want both, I'm happy to send them. Also, you are a no-reply blogger so please e-mail me with your address as I have no way of contacting you!

I have decided to not offer up the crewelwork kit so I'm sorry if anyone was looking forward to that! I don't think there would be any interest as it's quite a large kit in lovely shades of 70s browns haha. Who knows, maybe I'll throw caution to the wind and change up the colors for a bright new piece. Or I'll just donate it. :) I do have a couple more things to giveaway but I will save them for a little later; I'm very close to a related finish and a nice, round number of followers.  So, done for now!

Buuut... I have a question for you more experienced stitchers! DMC Light Effects floss is metallic, right? Are there similar "sparkly" floss types that aren't metallic? I have never used Kreinik (which is still metallic) but does it create the same effect? Would I want the blending filament or some sort of braid?  Is there some other magic sparkle floss out there?   Please tell me all your woes and joys trying to get sparkle! :D

helpful stitching buddy

the other end :)

Klondike doing what he does second best (first best is the other end of the spectrum: teleporting around the house). I wish my other two derps would take the hint and snuggle like this! It's much easier to stitch when they're beside you instead of insistently on the lap!

what a life

  3. Definitely kreinik over light effects. They're both sparkly but kreinik is so much easier to work with. As for the filament it all depends on the effect you want. To me filament is harder to work with but I've never used kreinik filament.

  4. Congrats to the winner. Your stitching buddy is so cute;) It will be my first time using Kreinik but based on what I've read they do enjoy working with it.

    1. Kreinik is hard to come by here unless I become willing to spend too much online (which I'm not hahaha :D). I think I will have to shelve my ideas until I can plan a shopping trip to The City!

  5. I am not more experienced stitcher but I am going to poke around and give my suggestion too :)
I have no idea which metallics are good. I have tried Anchor and DMC they both have same difficulty level. To my knowledge, DMC light effects is just brighter and shinier, it is not metallic. DMC metallics is a separate type and shade range. I am thinking of using metallic threads that come in spool for machine embroidery and free hand embroidery.

  6. Congrats to the winner!!
I have used Kreinik and really don't like it.
I have used filament (blended with cotton) and don't like it either.
Basically, anything metallic, although providing really pretty effects, I find a nightmare to use!! But hey ho, tha's just me :D
Best advice is to try & use what you like best.

  7. I love love love using metallic and sparkly threads in my work! DMC metallics and Light Effects absolutely suck IMHO and have put so many stitchers off metallic threads it is untrue! I find Kreinik fine to work with but my number one metallic that I use all the time and sub in place of Kreinik and DMC is Rainbow Gallery's Petite Treasure Braid. It is so easy to use and doesn't fray anywhere near as much as other metallic threads and in the UK is much better value for money as you get twice as much of it on a card (22 metres) as you do Kreinik on a spool (11 metres) for near enough the same price! PTB is the same thickness as Kreinik #4 braid and I only ever use 1 strand on 14/28ct and 16/32ct. I also love Petite Silk Lamé braid, which is basically a silk with a metallic thread running through it. Anyway, if you need any more info you know where to find me :).

  8. Good luck with your sparkly stitching, I'm not a fan of metallic in any form.

  9. I don't have an issue with DMC Light Effects like other people do. But that may be down to my stitching method which is the "secured needle" method, basically thread the needle down to the middle of the length of thread and attach the thread to the fabric by the two loose ends. You are stitching with two strands but they can't come unthreaded and there is less wear and tear because they are only going through each hole once not twice like when there is a "tail"
Hope that makes sense, it's hard to describe without a little series of pictures!

  10. Ooh, what a cutie! I love it when they snuggle like that, although right now it's starting to get quite hot here in Mississippi, so snuggly kittehs add to my heat index!
