owhat!

omygosh, remember that last post where I mentioned moving? Yeah, we moved. Again. Long story short, the first house was horrible and I'm more than a little irked at the landlady for not disclosing the problems involved with the house. We got out of there ASAP into a delightfully crafty-inspiring farmhouse out in the country. The downside to this awesome new house is no internet yet and possibly ever! (I'm currently updating while visiting family for the holidays.)

Of course all this moving means I've failed to get my Christmas goal(s) finished (and everything else Christmas really!). This makes me SadRosey because I've made myself a small ornament for the past couple of years and I didn't get one this year! :( I'll just pretend our new awesome house is my ornament. Once I get settled, I'll be able to post some progress pictures, even if it has to be through library internet! I already have plans for a craft/hobby room, yay! I feel like it needs to be decorated terribly geeky but I might save that for the computer room. :D

I hope y'all have a magnificent 2012 and that all your stitchy goals come true! ♥

Where did I go?!

I've moved! And have found out the hard way that this is an absurdly awful time of year to move! I did manage to unpack my stitchy things (what, we need kitchen utensils? Nah...) and make progress on my moth angel! I've actually attempted to modify the pattern a bit and I think it looks acceptable and possibly unnoticeable if one doesn't know the pattern! I have pictures but no way of uploading them as I haven't unpacked the transferring apparatus!

I've also taken pictures of our "Christmas tree" that I've created just to have something, haha. I taped some yarn to the wall in the shape of a tree and have it "decorated" with Christmas cards. It's a little ghetto but I have been so overwhelmed with packing and unpacking to put up a real tree (too much farm girl pride to have a fake tree). I shouldered aside my prejudice and went with the yarn.

I'm sad to have missed the IHSW this month. I'm so close to finishing so maybe there is hope for something before Christmas. If the beads don't kill me first.

I think they are determined to do so.

Another week, another SAL update!

I'm just gonna jump right in with the pictures, haha.

Before!

After~ Not just a flying head!

Sorry for the ultra-bright picture! I used a different camera and was unfamiliar with the settings. I feel like I'm not making substantial progress on her but I'm so busy packing and flailing my arms around that it leaves very little time to stitch (or anything else, really)!

Because I left it on the hoop, you can just barely see my edge-binding method: painter's tape! I don't really like masking tape because it always seems to leave a funk behind on my projects. Painter's tape doesn't leave the funk, but it can be hard to stick to certain types of fabric. I seem to be too impatient to fold and baste my edges, haha. Well, that's all for today! I hope everyone has a lovely stitching atmosphere for the next week, too~!

Question and SAL Update!

We had a gorgeously heavy frost last night and the world is a million sparkles this morning. I love wintery sorts of times!

Question: Is there something going on with the blogger dashboard? Some journals randomly appear and disappear in my reading list (usually I have to refresh several times just to make sure I get them all and even then, I'm not sure). I like the streamlined look of the new blogger interface but it seems awfully buggy and counter-intuitive (unless the old one was this way as well and I hadn't used it long enough to notice?). Even on my blog itself, the minions members widget fluctuates between the number of followers, usually hiding the newest followers... and then showing them the next time.

SAL Update! I worked a little bit on my Christmas piece for Julie's SAL! Suddenly, it looks a bit less like a moth.

Maybe if I add antennae?

My beading is not quite exquisite, haha. I've worked a little past this point (very little); I'm filling in her robes. Which involve beads. SO MANY BEADS. I'm really impressed with how much a beaded piece weighs and I'm not even finished. I wonder if this would make a good choice for one of those no-sew cubes? I don't have any fabric though, so I guess I'll have to smile sweetly and bat my eyes for my guy to take me to a local quilting shop~ ;)

A Giveaway, Pattern, and Meme!

First of all, thank you for your kindnesses regarding last post's issue. I'm feeling better, although still worried about my friend.

Next: A giveaway! Leesasaur makes totally awesome amigurumi and is having a giveaway for her super cute French Toasts! Go check out all her stuff; everything is really cute and appropriately dorky. :D

NextNext: A new pattern on the patterns page! I saw an advertisement in the Dec 2011 Game Informer magazine that I thought would translate well to a cross-stitch pattern! Clicking on the picture will take you to the SpriteStitch forums if you're interested in downloading it. I still haven't found a suitable way to host my patterns. Can anyone tell me if Google docs would work for this sort of thing? I usually post in PDF formats.

Christmas Shooter!

Since I don't have any progress shots to post (still!), I thought I'd entertain (myself?) with a conglomerate of stitching memes~ I forget where they all came from so if the original writer stumbles upon this, I'll give you credit!

Where did you learn to stitch?
I taught myself how to cross-stitch by picking up small kits in thrift stores. Those little bitty ones that come with the plastic frames. They've either become Christmas ornaments or decorations for my grandmother's kitchen.

What is your favorite type of stitching?
Finished. XD
I assume this is talking about what kind of stitches...? I like cross-stitch the most because I'm very fond of pointillism / stippling / divisionism styles in the art world. I suppose I could French knot a piece. (*hears gasps and shudders from around the world*)

How many years have you been stitching?
Summer of 2009 is when I picked up the kits, so almost two and a half years, yay~

Have you tried any new techniques in the past year? If so, which?
Blanket stitching! It makes for such a professional looking finish. Now if only I could cut straight!

Do you prefer small or large projects?
Usually I prefer large projects because they just look so darn cool. Small projects are good for morale though ("Hey, I finished something!").

Any particular subject matter you prefer for your projects?
I really like video game and anime/manga subjects. Anything that's not exactly traditional. I also like holiday stitching so I should incorporate that into the other genres.
Then sell them on Etsy.
And rule the world.

Where do you get your inspiration?
A lot of it comes from either deviantART or Sprite Stitch or MrXStitch. I'll get inspired, then Google everything. Sometimes, I'll just be reading and think, "Oh, now wouldn't this be fun to stitch!" I need to get an Idea Book that I can keep on my person at all times.

How do you hold your fabric?
With my toes.
...:D
I'll do small projects in a hoop, really tiny ones (like a badge) without anything but Magic Finger Tension, and large ones on my floor stand. An 8" hoop is the largest size I can comfortably hold in my hands without my wrists freaking out. I really, really, really prefer the floor stand and will baste extra fabric on projects just so they'll fit it.

Floss licker?
Oh yeah baby~<3 I'll slobber all over that strand if it gets it through the eye, especially of a beading needle! I have multiple threaders but they're usually over there and I'm usually over here. Licking is much more convenient.

How do you thread your needle?
Lick and poke. I'm almost always doing the loop method so it's two ends poked through the eye.

What needle do you like best?
I must be too much of a n00b. I like pointy but not very pointy that they stick in me every time I so much as glance at them. I think they're called embroidery needles. Whatever size comes in kits. 24...26...? I've recently discovered the magical world of needle sizing (it's like piercing ears!). I do not like the beading needle. D:

Are you a needle loser?
I try extremely hard not to leave anything out after the horror story of my friend having to rush her cat to the vet for consuming three(!) needles. Plus, I'm horribly forgetful so if the needles aren't put away, they're forever gone, lost in the dregs of my fuzzy memory.

Do you stitch on the go?
I have a little travel kit I take with me! I've found I can only stitch for an hour in a moving vehicle. I don't get carsick but I do get a headache trying to count in a wriggling vehicle. But stitching is a great activity for traveling -- people are usually interested in what you're doing and it's such an easy craft to do and still have a conversation.

What fabric do you prefer to stitch on?
Um. Stitching fabric? :< So n00bish. I've worked with 14- and 18-count Aida, hardanger, and now 28-count Zweigart (linen? how do you know?!). The Zweigart is so nice and soft compared to Aida, but it's much easier to miscount.

Bobbins or floss bags?
Both. All. Everything. Just give me floss. I have bobbins in floss bags.
I have a bunch of floss that I know nothing about (brand or exact color) as I thrift shop and buy up everything I don't need. One trip resulted in a project that came with floss bags and I've kinda fallen in love with them. It's so nice to just stuff the skein in the bag and any loose bits of floss can go in there too!

Are you a scissors collector?
Not really. I have two pairs of embroidery scissors -- 1) a vintage stork pair that my grandmother gave to me, and 2) a generic, cut through anything pair.

Do you do your own framing, and if so, do you lace or pin?
It's like a slap to the face to realize this, but everything I've ever finished hasn't been finished! Unless you count those little plastic frames from my "teaching kits" but those were neither pinned nor laced! Badges are finished so maybe they count for something? :D

Are you a floss floozy?
I'd have every single floss ever created in the history of ever if I had the money. The extremely vast majority of my stash comes from thrift stores so I imagine I have quite a collection of vintage floss without realizing what it actually is.

Silk?
I haven't stitched with anything but cotton (and now metallic, eee! I'm so advanced. :D) but I picked up some lovely rayon floss to drool on try.

Railroader?
On occasion. Sometimes it happens spontaneously natural-like and I think, "Ooo, look at that pretty stitch!" and congratulate myself on a job well done.

Are you a pattern or designer snob?
I don't think so...? If I like something, I like it. That being said, however, I like a lot of designs but stitching them is something else. I think some HAEDs look lovely but I'd never stitch them. I'm very fond of Alessandra Adelaide patterns, though (she has a blog too!).

Do you get antsy when you give someone a stitched gift?
Kinda. Not everyone can appreciate the time that goes into cross-stitching and everyone is so monetary that assigning a 'value' to a stitched piece is difficult.

Have you reached S.A.B.L.E.?
If you look at my freebie folder, yes, o good gravy yes. I also have a pattern box, as well as a couple of totes of actual materials. I can't help it; gotta have them all! :D

Do you wash your projects?
Yes. Country living with feline helpers does not always make for the cleanest stitching environment.

That's all! I hope you weren't blinded (or horribly bored) by the wall of text!
I'm usually a happy, cheerful (flighty?) person online and this is strictly a stitchy blog, but I feel compelled to post about the radio silence. The mother of one of my best friends suddenly passed away so neither the SAL or IHSW happened. I haven't touched anything remotely stitch-related since last Tuesday. I'll pick it back up when I get the house and my heart back in order.

That's all.

I had S.E.X., yaaaaay!

Gotta love stitchery's acronyms, haha (for those that didn't know: S.E.X. = Stash Enhancement eXperience)! I was finally able to get into a kinda local LNS shop yesterday. It's only an hour away, so you know, relatively close, hah. It was heaven. Walls of floss. A fabric corner mountain. SPARKLY FABRIC.

I live in such a rural area that small things like this are quite a rarity, especially ones that stock things like SPARKLY FABRIC. One of my poor kitties was rushed to the vet this weekend for emergency care so I couldn't afford to go completely nuts, but I did pick up the floss and fabric for my next Final Fantasy project, as well as a package of perforated plastic(!!!!), and some gorgeous colors of the discontinued DMC rayon for 25¢/skein. I have no idea what I'm going to use the rayon floss for but it's so lovely I might just hang it on the wall and stare at it.

I'll work on the SAL tomorrow and possibly start the FF project for IHSW this coming weekend. Or maybe I'll play with the plastic canvas since people over on SpriteStitch have such amazing ideas for using that stuff. Maybe I'll start on some more Christmas things. I don't know! Aaaa, so much to do, so little time~

SAL & Beads!

I can't believe how many times it took to get a decent picture, rar! I really need a new camera or to get un-lazy and scan my projects. Anyway, I've joined Julie's Christmas SAL. It's technically for ornaments so I'm going to pretend this is just a slightly-larger-than-normal ornament (I've received permission so keep your floss on!). 8D

A... bug wing?

Totally Christmas, right? Moths are Christmas creatures too, right?

I won't post a picture of what it will look like for those who like surprises (what, I like to make up wild imaginings sometimes), but you can see a finished one here. So many beads. It's really awesome stitching on this fabric though. I feel like I've expanded my horizons by branching off onto something that's not Aida or hardanger, lol.

I'm not entirely sure I can finish it before Christmas because of the beads and my supreme n00biness with them. I will try though~ I think it would make a lovely gift if I decide to part with it.

Site Update

Just a quick post to announce that I now have a "patterns" page on here, yay!

Since joining the Sprite Stitch forums, I've been flexing my pattern making skills in the requests area. I'm still pretty new to doing this, so constructive criticism is most welcome!

Most of the patterns were designed with 18-count Aida unless the requester specified otherwise.

Yay!

New Project & Coolness

Mrs. Amberghini over on Last Yesterday left me a pretty awesome link yesterday which fired up all sorts of imaginings. It's a Cross Stitch Wall Mural! Seriously, now how awesome is that! I told the boy I'm going to paint Nyan Cat across our whole living room. :D
昨日に、Last YesterdayのAmberghini-さんはすごいリンクを私に言っていました。 クロスステッチの壁の壁画です! 真剣に素晴らしいです! 私の全体の居間に「ニャン猫」をペイントしたいです。(≧ω≦)b

I also started a new project~ It's a small Mill Hill kit I picked up in a thrift store. It has a wintery-Christmas feel to it. And beads! And metallic floss! Stitched on 28 count Zweigart fabric!
私はまた、新しいプロジェクトを開始しました~ それはリサイクルショップで買った小さなミルヒルキットでした。 冬の - クリスマスの感じています。 とガラスビーズ! とメタリックフロス! と28カウントのZweigartの布にステッチします!

Beading needles are scary! I mean, jeez! That thing is like 2" long and skinny and so sharp! It's like a dangerous weapon!
ビーズの針はとても危険です! まったく! 5cm長い、細い、鋭い! 危険な武器ですよ! 怖いよ。

IHSW Results ~ IHSWの結果

I didn't manage all of my goals this time, unfortunately. The weekend was just too busy. I did manage to finish the stitching though~
残念ながら、私はすべて目標を完了しませんでした。 この週末には、忙しすぎました。 でも~ 私はステッチを仕上げました~

It still needs washed... and apparently blocked. Haha, I didn't realize how crooked the bottom of the pumpkin was until it was scanned. Don't mind the weird-looking backstitch on the top left side of pumpkin; it has been tightened (dunno how it got loose in the first place).

This is the first pattern I drew entirely from scratch (instead of using a preexisting image loaded into KG-Chart). The lettering is loosely based on the pumpkin font I found through a Google search. Blair (cat form) and the soul face are from the manga Soul Eater.

I took the opportunity to join the Sprite Stitch forums this weekend. I have been lurking as a guest on that site for years as I'm generally shy about joining forums. The awesomeness that is available there finally convinced me to register.

IHSW October~ IHSW 十月~

I absolutely cannot believe it has been a month already. That means I finished FFVIII a month ago and it's still lurking on the frame! Eek!
私は絶対にそれは既に月間されて信じません。 私は1カ月前にFFVIIIを仕上げた、それはまだフレーム上に潜んでいます! ヒッ!

Goals for IHSW:
IHSWの目標:
  1. Finish orange in "Soul Pumpkin"
  2. 「ソウルパンプキン」のオレンジを仕上げます。
  3. Backstitch, backstitch, backstitch! (and a few more French knots)
  4. 返し縫い、返し縫い、返し縫い! (さらにいくつかのフレンチノットステッチ)
  5. Finish and possibly wash as I've been using a hoop
  6. 完了です! フープを使った… としておそらく洗います…
  7. Frame!
  8. 額縁です!
How much will I get done this time~? In my tiny rural community, it's the time of year for the Heritage Festival, known locally as the Fall Festival. It's a fun event involving delicious amounts of food (you'll gain weight just looking at it) and local arts/crafts that very nearly decuples (that's 10x) our population. Not that that means much to the city folk, but it's a big deal around here!

If you haven't noticed, I'm attempting to post in both English and Japanese. The results from the Google translate gadget are a little off, so I'll try to do my own. I want to practice anyway. Correct my grammar if you want (English or Japanese, haha!). :D

Hoop Art?

Oh, gosh. I'm so tired I clicked "View Blog" twice instead of the new post button. Why so tired? Fall Housecleaning. I hear the screams of terror. After an exhausting three days, I have a sparkling living room. Now for the rest of the house...

While I was cleaning, I found a hoop buried in the depths of my stash box. After the glee settled, I wondered how I could possibly not lose it again, along with my other random hoops I seem to have accumulated somehow.

O_o

I don't use all of those hoops; the darker ones are rather old metal ones with spring tension. They're pretty (I really like the oval one) but they're so rusty, they'd stain whatever fabric I'd load in them. They look nice with the others though~

Also included is the ALOHA art from Hawaii (I lived there for a few years so I have random Hawaiian goodies sprinkled around the house) and EVA Unit 01 standing sitting guard on the little stereo.

The Soul Pumpkin is almost done. I just got distracted by life. Weee~ :D

Soul Eater ~ Blair

Yosh, it is indeed Blair from Soul Eater (日本語で: ソウルイーターのブレア…化け猫です。)! I enjoy the manga quite a bit. I chose her cat form for decency (hah - guess I could've chosen Lust chapter form :Q~). Plus, her cat form is cute. This is where I got her pose. I thought that an image existed of her in a similar position, or her sitting on a pumpkin (cat form) but I couldn't for the life of me find it. It sorta dawned on me as I was stitching that if one didn't know the subject was a cat... she kinda looks like a purple monkey, lol. The pumpkin itself needed a face because what is Halloween without jack-o'-lanterns? Google didn't fail me this time as I found the face I was looking for: the logo. I've dubbed it a "Soul Pumpkin".

おたくじゃありませんけれど…
"Soul Pumpkin" kinda has a hat at the moment...

Just miles of orange and backstitching left...

In this picture, my hoop is "upside down" from what I normally do. When I was adjusting the positioning of it, I noticed it said "THIS SIDE UP" on the full circle part. Wait, what? I've been loading my fabric wrong since the beginning?! Puzzlement ensued. I've always put the full circle part underneath the fabric and the screw part on top. I obeyed the great and wise hoop for surely it knew better than me.

Urg. I do not like how it feels in my hands this way. Perhaps I'm too used to holding it the other way and it has blinded my ability to follow directions. I can see where it could be a tad bit easier to stitch as you know where the smaller hoop is but I'd rather have it easier to hold. My wrists give me enough trouble as it is.

Hoop users, how do you load it? Am I an alien?

A Fresh Start

Yay, my desktop is fully functional again. I celebrated by making a new pattern! Something a bit smaller than the FF pieces, hah. I wanted to get it done by a certain time.
Hooray, a purple... blob?

Any guesses as to what it may be? LJers, NO CHEAT!

No?

No purple blob illumination?

What about if I rotate it 180°?

No, it's not Grimace.

I didn't take any interim pictures so this next one should flicker a light bulb in at least one of you (Topcho, I'm looking at you as you've stitched something related o_o).

Yes? No?

The colors are a bit off. I told myself I was absotively posilutely limited to what I had in my stash for this project and I didn't have the precise purple-y gray-ish black needed. Plum works well enough, and looked nice with the rest of the floss toss. The pattern, I think, turned out remarkably well for me drawing it from scratch in KG-Chart.

I hope.

Fans may disagree. :B

I ship SoMa liekwhoa.

Sept IHSW ~ Finish!

Hello to any new people checking out my blog! :) I feel like this was pretty successful for my first IHSW because I... I actually finished it! *squee* Without pigs flying or the piece bursting into flames or my eyeballs falling out of my head (though they did come close).

"Even if the world becomes your enemy...
I'll be your knight, I'll protect you."

I thankfully didn't have to frog whole letters; it was the backstitching that was making them look a little odd. Once removed and redone, the letters looked more appropriate. I did redo Rinoa's flying hair a little bit. It's more inline with the original image now, but not quite there. I didn't have to adjust the cloth to finish her swoop! I could jussst barely stitch the last few on the end, but it was possible.

Squall's jacket poof remains unfilled. I practiced the clipped velvet stitches and while they do look pretty awesome, they don't really have a feeling of fitting in with the rest of the piece. Perhaps I need to think more on it. If anything, they'd have to wait until the piece is washed or they'd get a weird stiff sort of feeling I would guess.

Which brings me to a question. To wash or not to wash? I'm still (relatively) new at this, so more experienced stitchers stopping by, please let me know what you think. I think the piece needs a bath as it has been on the frame for 5½ months. It's a bit dusty and has a few kitty helper hairs. I've washed other pieces with no trouble, but I'm afraid of washing this piece with its abundance of bright reds (floss is DMC cotton). I'd probably shrivel up into a little dust heap if the colors bled.

Technical Details

  • Chart designed with KG-Chart and featured 46 colors originally. In my tweaking, however, it actually wound up being ~15. Yeah. I discovered early on that KG-Chart likes to go crazy with artifacts in web images and can't handle blending or fading.
  • 1 over 1 on white 22 count (hardanger). Black 2 over 1.
  • Finished size: 11" x 14" (26.5cm x 35cm)
  • Started: April 1, 2011, Finished: September 18, 2011. Roughly 60-70 hours.

Lessons Learned
(hopefully)

  • Tweak chart. Tweak again. Tweak five more times. Tweak. Think you're done? Tough, tweak more. No matter how much you tweak, once you start stitching, things will look different and you'll tweak some more.
  • Confetti color transitions.
  • Half stitches are so much easier to pick out when a mistake is found and make it much easier to discover areas that aren't going to look right. Exception: black.
  • Work black one line at a time, preferably up. My eyesight is horrible to begin with and I darn near went blind stitching black that had been tent stitched first.
  • Maybe bright lights and magnifiers would be helpful.
  • For the love of potatoes, GRID, YOU FOOL.
The "artsy photo" attempt.
The timing for finishing this is pretty awesome. I should be getting a new OS drive today which will allow me to set up my desktop computer again (it has all my charts on it). I'm pretty sure which one I'd like to stitch next but feel free to speculate. :D

First Issue!

Hooray, I'll be taking part in my first IHSW! I tend to pronounce acronyms out instead of saying the letters so IHSW has been dubbed "issue". Yes, I know I'm weird. Thank you. I look forward to making the time to sit down and actually, possibly finish stitching FFVIII. I'm so close but I've been rather busy this week stripping old and poorly installed caulk from a tub. Very unfun. Yesterday I smelled like some awful combination of Goo Gone, rubbing alcohol, and caulk, yuck!

Goals for IHSW:
  1. Frog those inappropriate letters
  2. Restitch those letters appropriately
  3. Adjust fabric on stand and finish the last little bit of Rinoa's swoop  Adjustment wasn't necessary!
  4. Practice clipped velvet stitches to see if I like them enough to give Squall a fuzzy jacket poof. Currently vetoed though they did look cool. Just not sure if they were fitting with the piece as a whole.
  5. Finish?! :D :D :D
We'll see how much I actually accomplish. If I defy all odds and actually complete it with time to spare, I'll work on the Dolphin Trio. It has been a WIP for far, far too long.

楽しみにしてる!

Cruel Finish

Cruel indeed. Four. Four little pine boughs. Fourrr. And I ran out of yarn. It'd be hard to find a replacement for the yarn as the kit is 30 years old. So, I improvised. I used the closest green yarn I had in my stash to finish it up. It's a little darker than it's supposed to be but it works.

...Right? D:

Count the French knots? :D

Also, if it is possible for yarn to hate, the replacement yarn really hated me. Maybe it didn't like being taken apart (I only needed one little ply) but I'd stitch. And it would fray apart. I'd get a new piece and stitch. It would fray apart. I persevered and so, finished. Take that, yarn! You cannot defeat me!

I hope you like French knots because there's more than the grains of sand on every beach in the world. Luckily, most of them aren't "pretty" French knots. In other words, they didn't have to be perfectly tight little balls. Instead, they have a little loopy sticking out one side. It's most noticeable in the girl's hair (which I find adorable despite it being warning cone orange).

Now, how should I actually finish it? I think a rough wooden frame would suit the piece quite well. Finding one might take another couple of years. I also considered a felt back lining and turning it into a sort of wall or window hanging thing. Any other suggestions? I'm really hopeless when it comes to Ultimate Finishing Techniques.

Stitches involved: satin stitch, stem (outline) stitch, French knots, back stitch, long and short split stitch.

Of Cats and Crewel

After browsing around on here, it came to my attention that a very large portion of cross-stitchers (and crafters in general!) have feline friends. Well, the internet does tell me that cat owners are more intelligent... ;) Seriously, though, I find it kinda interesting that so many crafty types are cat lovers. I have three kitty helpers - a silent, hyper, mixed Siamese male (Peanut), a vocal, black-and-white, head-butter female (Oreo), and an ancient pinkish/tan and white grandma kitty (Sandy). I have to make sure to put away my cross-stitch stuff because the temptation to steal a skein of floss is too great for them~

I had to take a break from FFVIII. I'm very, very close to being finished, but I was starting to feel like I was rushing and the stitching was suffering as a result. I put it aside for a while so I could step back, breathe, make mental adjustments before I go crazy and frog the last few letters entirely. Because I couldn't just not do anything, I dug out an old WIP that has been sitting forgotten in my stash box for a year.

Not my work - as picked up at yard sale!
Not the best pic but it's as of tonight

Crewel work is interesting. This one is so... 80s! I found it at a yard sale for 50¢ already started but it was so cute I couldn't pass it up. I don't necessarily like stamped canvas as there's no guarantee that it will line up with the fibers in such a way that one won't be able to see the stamps. I can hear some shrieks over the internet at the amount of french knots, haha. Both lambs, the girl's hair, decorations, etc. French knots don't really bother me but I'm not so great at satin stitching. I think my tension isn't tight enough in the hoop, or something.

Ah, well. I feel like it's a movie sort of night so I think I'll dig out some snow ice cream (well, maybe I should make supper first) and zombie in front of a different screen for a while. :D

Tweakerings

Tweaking with more settings on here, hah.  I'm still not completely understanding why I'm not showing up in certain places.  My blog is visible in my profile but not on the window that pops up on the following gadgets.  I'll get it eventually, right?  Sorry if it re-posts everything (or not).  It's not my fault, I swear!  ;)

I managed to get two letters done today despite my protesting eyes!  I find it easier to take my glasses off entirely and stitch with my nose about two inches from the fabric!  I should probably look into getting a magnifier and/or stronger light source before I go (more) blind.

Wanna Fanta?
I'm not at all pleased with the T.  It's supposed to be more like the F, with the curving inward and whatnot.  Yet another thing in which to be picky and frog, haha.  Two more letters and the Roman numerals!

And the frogging.

And possibly the poof filling.

And the last little bit of swoopy that will require adjusting the fabric on the stand.

And the washing(?).

And the framing.

Oi.

ETA (the following morning)!  Oh, happy day!  I figured out the problem linking my blog! (I think.)  Whenever I'd follow another blog, my avatar wouldn't show up and although it was clickable and had information about sites I've followed, it didn't link back to my blog.  I have now fixed this!  This was immensely helpful, once I found the correct search items.  Once I changed it for one blog, it changed for them all.  One step closer to victory!

FFVIII Update~

Gosh, I just get started and Blogger changes things up on me.  Less is more seems to be the trend.

Oh, well, let there be progress!  Since the last (pictorial) update, I have finished the remainder of the color and have started the trek across the fabric with black.  My horrible, horrible eyesight is catching up to me, but I aim to finish a length of floss in a day (a length being six separated strands but you knew that, right?).  Today I manged to do two lengths, but at the cost of wearing my eyes out!  I stitched a page width of the underline and this will take me out to the Y in FANTASY.  I would guess that each remaining letter is going to take at least two lengths of floss; maybe I can upgrade my daily requirement.

Assuming my eyeballs don't fall out between now and completion!

Yes, I am the final fan.

Hao I Du

Hmm.  I will get Blogger figured out... eventually.  Coming from LJ, it hasn't been easy trying to get things set up the way I'd like.  I have suspicions that something is up with my feed as I wasn't showing up in my dashboard despite having followed myself.  I hunted around in settings, changing nothing but re-saving my original choices.  I then unfollowed myself, re-followed publicly and voilà.  I switched back to anonymous out of curiosity, but I'm still there.  So, I'm not entirely sure what the issue is / was.  I can't imagine public vs anonymous had anything to do with it, but that's about the only straw I can grasp.  The images don't seem to preview on my dashboard, though.  Scouting around Blogger help makes me think it has to do with off-site hosting and the resulting link.

No pictures today, but I've completed the remainder of the color, yaaaaay~  Now for miles of black lettering and possibly redoing Rinoa's hair.  And adding Squall's poof, if I decide it is suitably awesome to do so.

Eeeeeeee.

Will I wash this piece?  I'm not sure.  It has some fairly bright reds and although DMC claims to be colorfast, red does seem to be a problem.  I'd probably go up in flames if I washed it and it bled.  I probably should have washed the floss before starting, just to be sure.  Luckily, the project isn't dirty as it has been exclusively on a stand allowing me to two-hand stitch with minimal fabric touching.

ETA:  Hmm, it appears to be not working again as it didn't appear in my dashboard.
ETA2: It appeared ~1.5 hours later.  I'll assume (for now) that this is the norm.

FFVIII Update and a Sunflower!

"...Whatever."
I was highly amused at Squall's expression at this point. Think of the emoticon -.- face.  I got so amused imagining his trademark "whatever" despite the loving embrace.  The giggling at my stand was probably a sign that I had stitched enough for the day.

So of course I stitched on.

August 27

They have faces and hair!  Rinoa's hair doesn't look right to me so I'll probably dig out graph paper and play around with designs until I get something I like more.  Squall's poof actually doesn't look too bad as exposed cloth now that he's 'finished' but I still like the idea of a clipped velvet stitch.  Decisions, decisions.

At this point, I feel like the end is near.  The black, despite being a pain to stitch, goes pretty fast.  There's only a bit more color underneath the lettering to finish out the yellow swoops.   Eeee.

Front
Back

Sunflower!
I apologize for the blurry pictures; my camera refused to focus on these for some reason.  I included a scanned image of the front, but my scanner decided that half of the back didn't exist despite my orders to the contrary.

This is a gift tag type thing I stitched for my boyfriend's grandmother (her favorite flower is a sunflower).  This was my first attempt using a blanket stitch for a finishing technique and the idea came from here.  It's a bit rough around the edges as I was terrified of cutting the floss, haha.  The stitch itself was quite easy and I really like how it gives it a bit of a professional finished look.

The sunflower motif came from BH&G America's Best Cross-Stitch Prairie Blooms sampler. I didn't have half the colors called for so I tossed my own from my box of mystery floss.  The "happy" font from Leisure Arts Leaflet 705.  I designed the 75 in all its simplicity. :)

Final Fantasy Cross-Stitch

Because I'm curious about how images show up, I give you an entry.  Most of it is copy-pasta from my other journal.

This is my current BAP (although it really isn't too big).  I had the incredible brainfart of stitching each of the 16 main Final Fantasy logos (1 - 14, including X-2 and XIII-2).  I found the highest quality image of each logo online and charted them with KG-Chart, a program that is quite wonderful despite being free.  Hunting up the materials has proven difficult as the most local of my LNS are over an hour away.  The colors are done 1-over-1 on white 22-count (hardanger) fabric while the black lettering is 2-over-1.  My floor standing frame doesn't adjust on the height so I had to baste some scrap fabric on the top and bottom edges.  The finished piece will be approximately 11" x 14" and is around 14,000 stitches.

"il rar" of course.

This was after approximately eight hours of stitching.  I discvored it is so incredibly hard to see stitching the black 2-over-1, but my eyesight has never been that great.  Can you guess which one I started first?  ;)

Approximately 14 hours.

If you know your logos, you probably squealed and said, "OMG IT'S FF------!"  No?

My dear boyfriend, financier of my housewifely ways, loves Final Fantasy VIII.  As he provides the money, it's only fair that he gets to pick what he wants stitched first, right?  :)  I think this is one of the more beautiful logos, although I don't know what Yoshitaka Amano was thinking when he did Squall's face like that, haha.  I might be a bit biased though; Squall is my favorite FF character.

No longer "il rar"~ :)

At this point, I discovered a perfectionist side to myself.  After counting 8o billion times, I still made the completed letters one row too tall. So, I picked them out and thanked my grandmother for giving me her amazing embroidery scissors (they're a stork variety, but old, German-made ones).  I stared at the picture for a while and wondered why I didn't do the flares of the letters in 3/4 stitches. The L at the time wasn't completed, so I stitched it with 3/4 stitches at the flares and liked the effect.  I picked out all the little flares even though they're not at all noticeable from a distance.

I also fought with myself to not pick out the yellow of Rinoa's paint swaths, particularly below the black line. If you look at the original image, they're more like confetti, tapering off into oblivion.  In the pattern, they're one blob with lighter stitches in to "deal" with that.  I really need to learn to listen to my intuition because as I was stitching the far left swoop, I thought it looked pretty awesome uncompleted... and plugged on with stitching. I didn't mind picking it out, but I did worry about the little holes in the fabric (my needle is just a teensy bit too fat for 22-count, but it was the skinniest I had without going to a sewing needle and stabbing myself to death).

And then there was a lull in progress.  Spring showed up, and it is impossible for me to spend spring indoors.  It started getting much too hot to be outside, so that leaves me with ample stitching time.

July 10th.

I was having a horrible time with the gradient which is one thing that KG-Chart does not handle well (another being blended threads).  After wrestling with the orange - red transition, I finally decided to ignore the pattern for the most part.  I use it for the general idea, but I take the gradient and blending into my own hands.

Hi, Squall~!

A little less than a month later, on August 3rd, I'm at this point.  I've started doing just half (tent) stitches in order to see the transition points.  Looking back, I wish I had confetti'd the stitching along the color changes.

August 23

Earlier this week, I started filling in the half-stitches.  I confetti'd the top layer of the stitch so the gradient has a more diffused sort of look.  Hopefully, anyway.  :)

August 26.

I'm starting to get to "exciting" parts.  All of the intricate detail of this piece is in the top half, and it was a challenge figuring out how to represent Rinoa's hand and arm sock.  Her hand in particular has caused me much grief.  At first, I grabbed a scrap of 11-count Aida to practice on (which was huge, btw, after stitching on 22-count).  I felt I was just wasting floss, so I switched over to graph paper and wrestled with different designs until I found something acceptable.  When I stitched it, it wasn't quite as acceptable so I had to tweak it again.  In the original image, Rinoa's fingers are like daggers positioned to rip out Squall's heart through the back of his jacket. I took artistic liberties and made her blunt-tipped. She'll have to work hard for Squall's heart now

I am also debating what to do about Squall's jacket poof.  Leaving it exposed cloth has appeal (lazy) but a clipped velvet stitch would really look nice (and be fun to play with).  I'm concerned that it would make it harder to frame under glass, though.

That's all for catching up on this piece.  I really look forward to the completion because it will look amazing on the wall.  Plus I can have all the fun of kitting up the next project!  :)

My cat is trying to shove himself under a pillow and blanket.  It really isn't that cold, Peanut.

A New Beginning... Or Perhaps Not

I wonder if this is succumbing to peer pressure.

What shall I blog about here?  It may become an outlet for my hobbies (embroidery, video games, numismatics), a place to post translation (attempts), a weather/climate ramble repository.  Hopefully I can be more mature, intellectual, and feminine but with a title like "ishkabibble," one should doubt it.

For right now, I'll use it to keep track of items of interest.
